If your manager does not hate you or feel threatened by your potential, pedigree or performance, and isn't impossible to please; you can reverse-engineer to get them to like you. Interest in your career progress can come later, or you assume autonomous responsibility.

You won't always meet a manager who likes you and is interested in your career progression as you switch jobs. However, a manager who hates you (for whatever reason) or feels threatened by your potential, pedigree or performance is a situation that will cost a lot to redeem.
